Singapore reaches women\’s table tennis finals

That pretty much means that they\’re guaranteed a medal – the first medal won by Singapore since its silver in men\’s weightlifting at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

I could be cynical and joke about how the Singapore team is entirely composed of second-string players from China, but to be honest, I\’d rather not. They\’ve proven me wrong, and I think they deserve any accolades that come their way.

Kudos to them.

  1. Wow, that’s great. Congrats to them – that’s quite a feat, in quite an exciting sport as well.

As for my country… really no hope. On a regional (and even Asian Games level) we’re good, but then all the dysfunctionality shines through in an Olympic year, I’m afraid. Until the corruption (during ceremonies, there are more mooks and companions than actual competitors!), infighting, and lack of training/facilities are addressed, chances of the Philippines getting any kind of Olympic medal again remain slim. For the remaining sched, there’s high hope for the taekwondo, but that’s about it.

I guess that one popular Philippine comedy show joke from the 1990’s should be revived. “By 2020, the Philippines will be a province of China, and in being so, will finally win its first gold medal!”

Oh and lol @ cheap, easily torn Chinese merch (apparently something even Phelps complained about previously too):
